One of the things everyone who owns a car must do is maintain it.If you choose to not maintain your car regularly you will end up having expensive auto repairs for your car.  If you really neglect it bad enough you might even fail a smog check. Finally the part of the car that is overlooked a lot of the times are the brakes.This is an overlooked part of the car even thought it is used so much everyday.  Whenever a customer of mine brings in a car to my San Diego brake shop it is sometimes one of the most expensive repairs.So I make it a point that they understand what needs to be done to take better care of it.  Doing things like keeping it's fluids level correct will help.
