Couple Sold Baby to Buy New Mobile Phone
A young couple from the Chinese Chongqing Municipality are reported to have sold their baby for 2,500 yuan (6) and used the money to buy a new mobile phone.
The story in the Chongqing Economic times tells us that the child's 19 year old mother, Zhang Yao, met the 21 year old father, Xin, on the internet. Their relationship developed quickly and Zhang gave birth to a health baby girl in November.
The couple said that they didn't think they could afford to raise and look after the child which is why they chose to sell her to a man who gave his name as Li Yong.
Police have reported that the child's unemployed parents spend most of their time on the internet. Their parents were not inclined to give them any support and so they had decided to sell their baby.
Both are reported to regret having sold their baby and the mother, Zhang, told police that, after the baby was sold, she kept crying and that she now wants to raise a child. The child's father, Xin, has asked police if could retrieve the child from the welfare center where she is currently being looked after.
The staff at the welfare center where the baby is being cared for have said that she has a healthy appetite, is very well behaved and is not afraid of strangers.
Police in the Longsha district have said that they hope that the family can be re-united and that the baby will be back with her parents very soon.
Police are currently considering whether anyone can be held criminally responsible as the selling of children is a criminal offence.
This latest shocking story from China is the latest case in which a very young couple have fallen into parenthood without any planning or thought for how they would support their newborn child.
