Third thing you could use is sandpaper. Sandpaper will allow you to smooth out any rough surfaces which will help you have a smooth coat of paint.
Fourth, you will want a caulk gun. All walls are not perfect. It could have cracks on the wood base or trim.A caulking gun will cover it up and help make your surface smooth.
